Hey Everyone! Last night (5/16/2023) I attended the screening of the upcoming movie The Blackening at The Grove in Los Angeles! I had been wanting to see this movie since I seen the first trailer. Directed by Tim Story, The Blackening is based off of a Comedy Central skit by the same name. A group of friends reunite for a Juneteenth weekend and things end up going sideways when they end up trapped in the woods by a killer.

Black characters being killed off first is a horror flick trope but The Blackening asks its viewers WHAT HAPPENS WHEN EVERY CHARACTER IS BLACK?? Cultural influence and history lend a major hand in how this film plays out. And it was entertaining from beginning to end.

The Blackening really does follow the blueprint of your standard cabin in the woods horror flick with a sprinkle of jigsaw. It feels satirical without being a spoof. (i.e. Scary Movie) And I can say the film is written so well! The cast is full of what I’d consider the next up in entertainment! Grace Byers, Jermaine Fowler, Melvin Gregg, X Mayo, Dewayne Perkins, Antoinette Robertson, Sinqua Walls, Jay Pharoah, and Yvonne Orji DELIVERED!

Although it can be enjoyed by all, The Blackening is indeed for THE CULTURE. It’s horror. it’s hilarious and it is BLACK AF.
